About Tom Pixton

I have worked in higher education communications for more than thirty years, most recently at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

During my tenure at MIT as communication specialist (2001-2016), I created and managed a variety of web properties, providing project management, information architecture and user experience strategy, design, and development. I partnered with some of Boston’s finest creative professionals to produce thoughtful, usable, and attractive web sites for MIT.

I designed and built MIT’s graphic identity standards website and established many of the rules for use of the MIT logo.

I developed a generic flexible web design that was adopted as the default theme for MIT’s Drupal Cloud service. Known as the “DLC Theme” (for Department, Lab, & Center), this design is fully mobile compliant, adheres to the MIT graphic identity standards, complies with current accessibility guidelines, and has been used to build hundreds of MIT sites.

I curated MIT’s community image library, creating and directing photo and video shoots. One of the most memorable was an aerial shoot from an DJI Octocopter drone, resulting in some iconic MIT campus images that have been shared and enjoyed by thousands on social media.

I am now taking on selected projects as an independent contractor. Please contact me if you think I can help you.
